Rancilio Rocky

The doser is really the only problem on the Rocky in my opinion. Below is a photo of the doser:

Grounds enter through the squarish opening near the top of the photo. They then sit around in the doser until you pull the lever on the right which spins the doser blades and dispenses the grounds. If properly designed, the doser should leave minimal grounds behind. However, as you can see in the photo below (also a top-down view of the doser) there is a significant gap between the outer edges of the doser blades and the inner wall of the doser chamber. There is also a significant gap between the bottoms of the doser blades and the floor of the doser chamber -- sorry, I couldn't figure out how to photograph the latter!.

The standard Rocky Doser Mod basically involves creating wipers for two or more of the doser blades out of electrical tape. Randy Glass has excellent instructions on his web site. However, for some reason, I was having problems envisioning the modification. If you're also having trouble, then hopefully the photos below will help.

These are the four parts that you will need to remove from the doser in order to perform the modification. From top left to bottom right: the nut securing everything, the upper doser blades, the metal separator, and the lower doser blades. The modification is actually performed on the lower doser blades. You can modify all six of the lower blades, but in most cases only modifying two of the blades is sufficient.

Below is a photo of an inverted and modified lower doser piece. I have outlined the electrical tape wipers in red to make them easier to spot. I didn't bother measuring and took two attempts to fit the tape wipers. It's very important to make sure your wipers are "dragging" correctly as you reinstall the lower doser blade piece.
