
The wonderful thing about lattes is that you can tell just by looking if everything is going well. Espresso should foam like Guiness as it pours from the spouts into your glasses. After a second or two you should then have a good head of reddish to golden crema on top of the espresso. Frothed milk should have a velvety texture from all of the tiny bubbles. If the espresso and milk are just right you can get hearts, rosettas, and other designs on top of your lattes.
My first latte art was accidental. I had been using my Silvia for a week or two and was making lattes for my girlfriend and I. I didn't notice for some reason, but she exclaimed that there was a heart on top and asked me if it was intentional. Unfortunately, I can't really lie very well and said that it was accidental.
Anway, since then I've been working on latte art. I still have a long way to go, but you can see some of my chronicled efforts below:
