Q: What does briareus mean?
A: Briareus was one of the three Hecatonchires from Greek mythology. Gyges and Cottus were his two brothers and Gaia was their mother. They each had one hundred arms and fifty heads. Briareus was cast into Tartarus but was rescued by Zeus and recruited to fight against the Titans. The Hecatonchires must have been an impressive sight as they hurled boulders with their hundred arms.
A2: Briareus is also the name of a character in Masamune Shirow's Appleseed manga (Japanese comic book -- don't bother with the Appleseed anime!). If you haven't read Appleseed, you have no idea what you're missing out on. Due to transliteration into Japanese and then into English his name in the American translation is spelled Briareos. After being caught in an explosion, he was turned into a cyborg with mostly mechanical parts except for his brain and some internal organs. His body features the Hecatonchires system which allows him to interconnect with various types of equipment.
